On top of that, my goal of running Boston in 2010 has been looking a little bleak. Well, I'm back on track and have a new short-term goal that is very ambitious. From now until Halloween, I have planned out my exercise and running schedule and it requires me to do something for the 43 days starting from yesterday (September 19th).

The workouts range from a day with a circuit workout or a 2 mile run to a long run of 16 miles. While doing all of this training, I'm going to keep this blog updated more frequently and possibly start doing video blogs because of the ease and lack of typing required.

Yesterday, I started this quest with a light swimming workout in the pool at the gym (1) and today I went out for a 10.3 mile run (2) (2 warmup, 10k, 2 cooldown). Tomorrow is a circuit training day after school.

Well, hopefully I will stick to this and I'll start seeing my mile times drop to where they were at the beginning of the summer and then lower still. Stay tuned for more information about school (which is going great) and everything else going on in my world.

Getting Amped for Miami

Today's Run: 4.02 miles, 29:52, 7:26/mile
Sunday's Run: 10.03 miles, 1:21:20, 8:07/mile
Thursday's Run: 4.21 miles, 33:55, 8:03/mile

Wooo!!!! I cannot wait for Miami in January now. Since I recalibrated my iPod, my times have looked great and the distances are much more accurate. Today's run was simply amazing. I checked my status at 3.1 miles just to see where I was and it turns out I set a new personal best for a 5k today (23:15). I went out early today and did not know what to expect from my body. Turns out, running early is good for me. I crushed my goal for today (which was 32:00) and got my fastest mile down to 7:15. That is the magic number for me. If I run 7:15 a mile during the Miami Marathon, I'll finish in about 3:10:00 and that will qualify me for Boston in April 2010, not 2011!! We'll see how the rest of the summer and fall go and my goal for this site might be moving up a year!

Stupid Calibration

Today's Run: 3.4 miles, 28:00, 8:14/mile (Nike+ was not accurate)

Well, it looks like I have to find a track and re-calibrate my Nike+ setup. I thought it was going fine and it looked like my times were getting better, but I was only partly right. My times have been getting better but much more so than my iPod was telling me. I had a feeling the other day that it was a little off, but today confirmed it. I went out for a run and when I was at 2 miles, the iPod was still not there yet. It wasn't until almost a quarter-mile later that it told me I had gone 2 miles. In the end, my 3.4 mile run was only counted as a 3.1 miler and that makes a huge difference.

My pace is the one thing that I really need to work on. I know that if I get out on a marathon course that I'm going to push myself the whole time but I want the time to be good as well. The time difference between what I did run and what Nike+ said I run was significant. On the iPod, it told me my pace was 9:00/mile. I did feel like I kept my pace slow, but not that slow. When figuring it out without Nike+, my pace was 8:14/mile! I have been getting much faster lately which means my workouts have been longer and at a faster pace than what I was thinking.

Tomorrow will be the day I calibrate the iPod with about a 2 mile run and hopefully from there I'll have to re-calibrate every month or so. Right now, I'm starting to get the thought that I might be able to use the Miami Marathon in January as my qualifier for Boston in 2010, not 2011. Let's keep our collective fingers crossed!!

One last thing, I ran in my brand spanking new Air Zoom Vomero+ 4s today and LOVED it. There will be more on those later. Good night all!

Running in the Rain

Today's Run: 8 miles, 1:07:00, 8:22/mile (Nike+ stopped working)

Today I went out for a run when it was already cloudy. I half-expected it to rain a little bit but did not know what I was in for. Using the Nike+ mapping feature, I was able to plan out an 8 mile run that took me to a different part of town than I normally run. The bonus part of that decision was that I know I finished my run even though it did not log correctly on my iPod. Another bit of news I was able to get from this run and my run on Thursday of last week was that I might need to recalibrate my sensor. My pace has been increasing but according to Nike+ it has been taking it longer for the iPod to register a mile.

Now that the technical stuff is out of the way, let's get to the run. First - this was probably my favorite run in a long time. It really made me feel like a kid and it was a refreshing feeling. The run started out like a normal run on an overcast day and somewhere around the 3 mile mark, it started to drizzle. By the time I hit mile 4, I was running in a torrential downpour and it felt awesome. The rain stayed heavy until I was about 2 miles from home and by then I had no music (my iPod stopped making noise at about 5 miles in) but I was in a great mindset by then.

Running in the rain is very different than any other running. Today there were 1-inch streams flowing down the road, huge puddles on the sidewalks, and my shirt weighed about 5 pounds. There were a bunch of times when I wanted to say "Screw it" and walk the rest of the way home. The turning point was around that 5 mile mark when I lost my music. As I was running down a hill, I saw a group of 3 women running towards me on the same side of the road. As we got closer, we both started whooping it up and exchanged high-fives as we passed. This moment showed me that I wasn't the only crazy person out in this weather and pushed me through those last 3 miles.

In the end, this run was great. I ended up with a great time and didn't overdo it. It sounds cliché but this run was both refreshing and cleansing. The rain felt good coming down and splashing in the puddles made me feel like I was 8 years old again. I didn't care that my shoes were soaked or that I had no music. It was just a pure run that gave me time to think and just focus on having fun. Today's run is definitely one I will remember for a long time and try to duplicate the feeling every chance I get.

Welcome to August

Well, it's August and it has been almost a month since my last post. During July I spent a lot of time running and tweeting when I wasn't at school working a summer program. Overall, July was a great success for me. The summer program proved to be more effective than we originally thought and some of the kids showed real potential. On the Twitter front, I was able to tweet 1000 times from July 1st to 31st. It ended up taking on a life of its own by the end and I'm glad to finally be finished.

As for running - what a month. I ran 67.91 miles at a 8:28 pace for the month. July also saw the longest run I've ever done (8 miles), my fastest 10k (52:01) and my fastest mile (7:35). The best parts about this month was I missed no workouts, hit the gym a bunch of times and look forward to my runs. All of the running has also made me realize that there are certain socks, shorts and shirts that I can wear and others that I can't wear when I'm running. I'll spend some time going into detail about that next week.

Going into August I have some goals and a great outlook on my running. I started a new training program on the Nike+ website and it ends on January 30, 2010. Coincidentally, the ING Miami Marathon is that same day. If everything works out the way it is supposed to, I will be running my first marathon right then and there.

This blog has been neglected for a month but that ends today. August will see the return of run details and playlists and will introduce posts about shoes, clothes and hopefully technique. If you find this blog interesting, please let me know and pass it on.

later,
mike

Twitter, Running and Algebra

Today's Run: 4.02 miles, 33:45, 8:24/mile

Well, back from vacation and I'm beginning to accept it. :( Well, since I've been back, I've worked, ran and started a Twitter Adventure with Dan (aka sneaker_nerd). First, the adventure....we are going to attempt to post 1000 tweets each during the month of July. So far, I'm a little behind the pace of 32ish a day (I have 52 in two days) but I'm catching up. Dan is over 100 so it's looking good. To this point, we have one additional follower and hope to get more and make #1000tweets a Trending Topic on Twitter.com.

Next on the list....Running! Went out for my first run in a week today and it felt good. To top it off, NikePlus.com has been updated and looks great! There are more features for sharing your profile with the world and the integration between Nike+ and Twitter/Facebook is built in now. Overall, the upgrade looks good and hopefully will get better with time. For splits on runs, I still like using RunnerPlus but that may change.

As for Algebra, I'm teaching a summer program to about 18 incoming freshman and today was much better than yesterday. The kids are starting to have fun and participate and that makes it so much easier to teach. I hope they keep getting better and that they realize school can be fun and worthwhile at the same time. Too many kids are willing to sit there and do nothing instead of jumping in and making the best of the situation. Maybe a handful of them will see that by the end of July and it will change they way they view school. Only time will tell.

Planning on some fun stuff for the Twitter feed for the 4th of July. Follow me to check it out!

Interstate Run Song

Today's Run: 4.02 miles, 33:50, 8:25/mile

Tuesday's Run: 5.01 miles, 46:24, 9:14/mile

Greetings from Lake Tahoe, NV/CA. We flew in yesterday and spent today driving around the lake and seeing some amazing sites. There is so much to do around here that it gets hard to decide where to start.

We had a long day of traveling yesterday - 9:05 am (Eastern) flight out of Philly, landed in Reno at 2:30 pm (Pacific) and had to drive about an hour to Lake Tahoe. At around 5:30 pm (had to get food and got stuck in a little traffic), we pulled into The Lodge at Kingsbury Crossing and settled in for the trip. The room we were given seems to be the best one they have. Somehow we got lucky enough to get a balcony with a view (slightly obstructed) of the Lake and mountains.

Today, we got up and decided to drive around to the South Shore of the lake and ended up going the wrong way. This ended up working out great!! We followed a winding, mountain road for about an hour and saw some amazing sites. The scale of the mountains and valleys is hard to describe. There are areas that you can look down and see neighborhoods that look like SimCity towns. Once we turned around, we headed back towards the lake area and got to drive on more mountain roads that give you a view of the bluest water outside of the Caribbean (right). There are miles and miles of trails around the lake and many of them are in the Emerald Bay area. Tomorrow, we are going to rent some kayaks and head out on the water for the day. There is only one island in the entire lake, Fannette Island, and it is only accessible by boat. On the top is a 16x16 stone Tea House that was built in the 1930s. All you have to do is get out there and explore. We can't wait!!

To finish off today, I decided to go for a run and not jack up my training schedule too much while on vacation. For those who do not know, the average elevation of the city of South Lake Tahoe, CA is about 6,237 feet above sea level - 1,000 feet higher than Denver. Needless to say, running at a high elevation is not fun. The other not fun part is running downhill for a mile and not realizing it until the mile comes back about 15 minutes later. Anyways, it was a lot of fun to run in 75 degree weather with no humidity. Another part of this run that was awesome was that it took place in two states!! We are technically staying in Stateline, NV and are only 1 mile from the border. I started my run in Nevada, ran the middle half in California, and finished up in Nevada. I've never got to do something like that so it was pretty cool. Finally, at the end of it all, I found out I ran my fastest mile!

After our festivities tomorrow, I hope to put up a boatload (hehe) of pictures and hopefully they will be able to show how great this area looks!

Quick Update

Saturday's Run: 2.69 miles, 22:38, 8:25/mile

Thursday's Run: 3.13 miles, 26:07, 8:21/mile

I don't know what it is but I've been unable to post as much as I want to lately. We leave for Lake Tahoe tomorrow morning. :D
4. We still have to pack. :(
5. Gotta run tonight and a few times this week. :\

Stay tuned for picks and updates. A lot of this happens in Philadelphia, but there are also ones that occur out in the suburbs. There are many parts of public education that need to change but these are just the parts that jump out as lacking any common sense or logic behind them.

Early Dismissals

I understand the idea of an early dismissal for professional development, before a break or during exams, but some schools take it to the extreme. To me, the idea of early dismissal is to get an "instructional day" completed in a shorter time. To do that, you would limit the classes you have or shorten them all to do smaller lessons (if that is possible). North Penn High School, had their sign listing the upcoming early dismissals the other day. On one day, the students were being sent home at 11:25 am. Now, that is early to me, but they get there at 7 am so it is understandable. The next day they were being let out at 9:25 am. How does that even count for an "instructional day?" Two hours?? This just feeds into the culture of not doing anything on certain days for a lame excuse. It's Friday...it's Monday....it's Raining....I don't feel like learning. We keep giving kids excuses to not do work and wonder why they don't perform or show up for jobs.

Grade Submission

When I was in high school, we had final exams and our grades were not submitted until they were taken. In Philadelphia, our grades were due on Monday. The last day of school is next Tuesday. That is 7 "instructional days" that have to be attended after the final grades were submitted. How does that make any sense? It is another situation where we tell the kids that it is acceptable to just do nothing when being forced to go to school/work. I have major issues with submitting my grades a week and a half before the end of school. Why are we creating an environment where 4% of the school year doesn't matter. We are required to have 180 days of class and we are throwing 7 of them away. Add to that the 4 days at the end of the second marking period after grades go in, the day before Christmas break and the day for the Phillies parade (unofficial day off for the students) and that brings the percent up to 7. That may not seem like a lot but if we expect our students to get jobs and become responsible, allowing them chunks of days that do not count does nothing for them.

Dress Code

I never had a dress code in any level of school but I like to think that if I did, I would have followed it and it would have been enforced properly. The school I teach at has a "dress code" but it is such a joke that it becomes ridiculous to try to enforce. Simply put, the student dress code is khaki or cargo pants (no holes) or a skirt (knee length) and a polo shirt in either white, navy or gold. Simple, right? Nope! The students come to school in their uniform to get in the building and then take the polos off, or wear different color polos, or wear jeans under the khakis and take them off when they enter. The worst part is when someone "tries" to enforce it with threats. Students are being told they will be sent home this week if they come to school out of dress code and if they keep it up, they will get suspended. Let me get this straight, this last week doesn't count and you're going to send me home for not wearing dress code? Sign me up!!

Graduation

Here is the last part of the school year that I don't seem to understand yet. Why is graduation before the year is over? This also ties into the grade submission part. Grades for seniors in my school had to be in a week before the rest of the students. They also did not have to go to class once that happened. Sooo, we gave the seniors 12 straight "instructional days" of nothing before the end of the year. I can see giving 2 or 3 days at the end for seniors to enjoy before graduating, but all of June? I don't get it. And to top it off, the Graduation ceremony is tomorrow - 4 days before school is out.

Anyways, I guess there is definitely some adjusting I need to make to teaching in the public school system but I really think that if they want to improve it, they need to set higher standards. If we expect more from our kids we may be surprised at what they can accomplish when pushed.

Woohoo!

Today's Run: 3.13 miles, 25:02, 8:00/mile
Sunday's Run: 3.12 miles, 25:20, 8:06/mile

Today was a treat of a day. Nice cool weather that was perfect for a run. New personal best for a 5k (24:56). Ran 3.13 miles at a pace thisclose to under 8 minutes. Went to the gym and lifted after the run. Not many students in class for the rest of the year. Things are looking up. I got back outside and ran and it felt pretty good. Tonight I also decided on setting some new goals to match my training. My run today was only 3 miles and so are 12 of the next 14. My fastest 5k on Nike+ is 25:39. My goal is to break that personal best at least 3 times in the next 3 weeks. The great part about using the iPod nano for Nike+ is the feedback at the end of the run. I put in a good run today and it was pretty cool to have Paula Radcliffe tell me I set a personal best in the mile (at 7:52!). I wonder who I'll get to hear next and what those times will be.

Until next time....

A little behind....

Last Run: 4.02 miles, 35:41, 8:52/mile

Hey there. Lately I've been a little behind getting this updated but I've had to go pick up the computer from KOP and I have been lifting and running this week so my time has been short. I have a seminar tonight and will hopefully run after that. I guess the one difference with it this year is that I'm at the end of my first year of teaching and it has been an adventure. Much like retail, there are things I see everyday that amaze me and I wonder what the world is coming to. Hopefully, next year will be a new experience and I can feel like I'm making a difference in the world. This year, I'm just glad that I survived. High school is nothing like what I remember it being and nowhere near what I would expect it to be.

There are bells but there is no consequence for not abiding by them.
There is a dress code but there is no consequence for not following it.
There is a no electronics (cell phone, ipod, pda) rule that is completely ignored and nothing the teachers can do about it.

I'm hoping that my school next year doesn't have these problems at the same level that they are here. It dumbfounds me that someone would ask for extra credit in May to make up for the work they haven't done since December. Another teacher who I was talking with recently made a great point. Extra credit should be work above what you have already completed - not a way to counteract what you did not feel like doing when it was due.

Anyways, I have July and August to get ready for next year and my plan is to go into the classroom with a method to keep my students engaged and motivated. If it doesn't work right away, I'll try something else until it does. Too many times this year I've seen the students dictate the way a class should go because they don't care or have no respect for anyone or both. We'll see what happens in September.

As for yesterday's run....awesome! My longest run of this training period so far and it felt good, I had to walk for a little bit at about the 4 mile mark, but I was able to finish strong and keep my pace well under 9 minutes. In a few weeks, my pace should be consistently around 8:30 and then I'll start trying to get it to 8:00. My loooonng runs don't start for a few months so I'm looking forward to finishing them quickly.

Until next time.....

Getting Faster!

Today's Run: 3.17 miles, 26:11, 8:16/mile
Thursday's Run: 4.01 miles, 35:00, 8:44/mile

I've run twice since my last post, I just didn't get around to writing anything about them until now. This week has been a great week for running. I logged 15.18 miles and lowered my average pace from 9:01/mile to 8:50/mile. I also had my fastest mile in as long as I can remember: 7:55! This is getting to become routine and that's what I need. Over the last two weeks, I haven't missed a run even when I didn't feel like it. This week, I'll be adding the gym back into the mix. Wish me luck!

Anyways, besides training, I'm going to be using the blog to talk about other things that are on my mind. I debated on started two blogs but I don't feel like it right now. :) If it gets to the point where I have enough to say and enough people to read that I need two blogs, it will be done. Anyways, off to enjoy the weekend!!

Good Runs and Old Classmates

Today's Run: 4.00 miles, 34:05, 8:31/mile

Gotta love Facebook! In all the years that I've been away from my first stint at Drexel, I lost touch with the 2+4 students I started with. Good times!

Well, back to today's run. Maybe getting that speed down to 7:00/mile is a possibility!

Busy, Busy Weekend

Weekend Runs: 2.21 miles, 20:02, 9:04/mile
2.01 miles, 17:47, 8:51/mile
4.00 miles, 36:32, 9:08/mile

As you can see, it was a busy weekend for running but Christi and I were driving all over the place. On Saturday, we headed to Brick, NJ for my cousin's graduation party. It was tons of fun and we were able to see family that we haven't seen in a while. The best part was that our tradition held up....all three of my sisters found their way into the pool but I stayed dry. :)

On Sunday, we only had to drive around to pick up food for the party at our house. We had her family up for a birthday/graduation party. Again, it was a blast and makes me realize how much I love having the weekends off.

Well, I was able to get all of my distance in this weekend even if I did it in pieces. The two 2-mile runs are from Saturday and were sandwiched around my trip to the gym. It works for me because if I run to the gym, I have to run back so I can get 4 miles and a workout in. Well, off to bed to get ready for another week. I have 3 more runs this week (4, 4 and 3 miles) and I'm trying to get my pace down. My last mile today (8:25) was the fastest I have run since I started again. I have a lot to do to get to 7:00/mile but we'll see what happens.

One last thing, there is a great site called Runner+. It takes your Nike+ info and displays it in ways that are more helpful to see paces and times. Check out my profile and sign up if you use Nike+.

New Job, New Run, New Post

Today's Run: 4.01 miles, 36:02, 8:59/mile

Today was a pretty good day. My stolen cell phone got returned first thing this morning and the projects set out for my classes actually went okay. Then everything got better! I had an interview at Dobbins High School at 3pm and caught a train home at 4pm. At 5pm, the principal called me to offer me a math position there for next year and at 5:03pm I accepted the position.

This is great for me. I know where I'm teaching next year and by the end of the year I should know what subjects I'll be teaching. Now I can take the summer to plan out my classes and hit the ground running in September.

Speaking of running, I did a little of that when I got home. I was scheduled to do a 4 mile run today and although I stopped and walked twice I was able to finish it. I think I need to focus on what I eat before a run so that I don't hit a wall. Playlist for today was straight-forward: Jack Ingram Nike+ Workout. It is supposed to help me run 4 miles at an 8:00 pace, but it finished before I did. :( Maybe next time!

No running tomorrow but some on Saturday. Stay tuned!

Anger + Moneen + 3.1 Miles + Rain = :)

Today's Run: 3.12 miles, 27:25, 8:47/mile

After a very enjoyable long weekend, it was not fun to get annoyed by little things at school today. My school never ceases to amaze me but unfortunately it is usually in not-so-good ways. Well, at least tomorrow is another day!

Since I started this new schedule I had to stick to it today, rain or not. I came home, got changed, grabbed the iPod and hit the road. I don't know what it is, but my pace gets better on short rest. There was a misting rain and it was refreshing and let me forget about the crapfest from 8a-3p today.

With the marathon a while from now, my main focus is to make sure I keep myself going and start bringing my time down. To qualify for the Boston Marathon, you need to clock around a 3:10:00 in a qualifying race. That comes out to about 7:25/mile (!!). My average pace on Nike+ is 9:15 right now, looks like I have my work cut out for me. If anyone has any suggestions for picking up the pace, send them along.

The playlist for today was simple. I put the iPod on non-shuffle and put on Moneen's CD The Red Tree. Great songs for running.

--mike

The First Run

Today's Run: 4.01 miles, 36:47, 9:11/mile

Tonight I started running again. In the past year I have gone through stretches where I run for a month and then just stop. Before today, I last ran on April 5th and before that it was November 10th. I will not make any excuses anymore.

My training schedule called for a 4 mile run and that is what I did. I put on the new Pegs, grabbed my sportband and iPod and hit the road. While running, I thought of what to put in this blog. Music is very important to me and allows me to just clear my head. What is amazing is hearing a song for the umpteenth time and taking something out of it that didn't mean as much before.

"If we don't take action now
We settle for nothing later
Settle for nothing now
And we'll settle for nothing later."
Rage Against the Machine
This set of lyrics just jumped out to me today. It is that simple. If I sit on my behind and do nothing, I never will do anything. It was right in the middle of the run when this happened and it just pushed me through.

Here is the playlist I put together for tonight's run. Any suggestions for great running songs would be great.

Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses

Promise - Simple Plan

Crazy - Gnarls Barkley

Voices (Are You Breathing) - Disturbed

Into Oblivion - Funeral for a Friend

Remember Me? - Eminem (featuring RBX and Stickey Fingaz)

Thunder - Boys Like Girls

Settle for Nothing - Rage Against the Machine

Two-Seater - Bowling for Soup

No One Else - Weezer

Cooldown - Numb/Encore - Jay-Z/Linkin Park

My iPod was on shuffle but the first and last songs were perfect.

--mike

A new start....

Today was the beginning of something that I hope to be big. So, sometime in April, I will be running my first marathon (don't know where yet, any suggestions would be great) and then I will run the Philadelphia Marathon in November 2010. The final part of this goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon in April 2011. To do this, I will need to finish the Philly one in about 3 hours (7.5 minutes per mile). Right now, my average pace is a little over 9 minutes - looks like I have my work cut out for me.

New Shoes

Since I will be doing a ton of running over the next 11 months, one pair of running shoes is not going to cut it. This may surprise some of you, but I will explain. Even though I have about 10 different pairs of "running" shoes, my feet only can tolerate one of them for actual running. This meant I needed to find one built on the same last as those. As luck would have it, my old place of employment had one pair of a size 10, Pegasus 25 in stock (added bonus: someone had returned the shoes with the insoles they bought and not the originals).

New Blog

You're ready it. This blog will be my way of keeping myself motivated. Hopefully I'll have some people who care enough to read it every now and then.
